This review will look at the Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year Old which is the entry whisky for the Balvenie core range. Following this review I’ll also be reviewing the whole Balvenie core range which consist of a 12yr Doublewood, 14yr Caribbean Cask, 17yr Doublewood and a 21yr Portwood. Within the core range there is two Doublewood expressions one being this 12yr and the other being the 17yr which I consider to be the older sibling which we’ll get to in the upcoming reviews.
The Balvenie distillery is located in the heart of Dufftown in Speyside, Scotland. It’s also located near its sister distilleries Glenfiddich and Kininvie. So the Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year old is aged in a combination of Traditional whisky oak casks and Sherry oak casks, it’s also bottled at an abv of 40% however I also have a 43% miniature. It’s a whisky that can also be found in supermarkets and local shops here in the UK for approximately £35, so without further ado let’s get into the tasting notes.
Nose: On the nose instantly greeted with honey notes, then the classic style of Balvenie of candied orange peel, sundried sultanas, apricots and for some reason I’m picking up honeydew melon. Then after leaving it sometime to breathe I’m getting a lot of red apples a basket full and then poached pears and hints of sweet tobacco.
Palate: On the palate the texture is light and begins with spices, notes of cinnamon, gingery warmth and floral sweetness of honeysuckle. A slight soft oaky presence can be tasted before making way to a nutty character and then the fruity notes reveal themselves; blood oranges with a combination of raisins and lots of dried fruit smothered in honey and vanilla.
Finish: The finish is for this whisky has a medium finish, spices which fade leaving an oaky note and a burst of orange zest, crushed almonds and ends on notes of honey.
AGE: 12 Years
CASKS: Tradition Whisky Casks + Sherry Oak Casks.
DISTILLERY: The Balvenie Distillery
COMPANY: William Grant & Sons
REGION/ORIGIN: Speyside, Scotland
Comments: In my opinion the Balvenie 12 Year Doublewood is a great whisky, something it find beginners and experienced whisky drinkers i.e. connoisseurs will enjoy. This dram from nose to finish ticks all the boxes for me as inviting yet offering a balance in all its flavours. Even though this is the entry level whisky to the Balvenie Core range, it encapsulates the house style which is ‘the Balvenie’ for all to enjoy. For the question is it value for money? it would be an unquestionable yes. I would recommend this if you haven’t tried it already.
