Balvenie 21 Year Old Portwood Review

This review will look at the Balvenie 21 Year Old Portwood which is the fourth expression in the Balvenie Core range. It’s also part of the whisky in the Balvenie core range. Since this is the final review from the Balvenie core range if you’ve missed any of the others be sure to check them out, they include the Balvenie 12 Year Old Doublewood, the Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask and the Balvenie 17 Year Old Doublewood.

The Balvenie distillery is located in the heart of Dufftown in Speyside, Scotland. It’s also located near its sister distilleries Glenfiddich and Kininvie. So the Balvenie 21 Year old Portwood is aged in a combination of Traditional whisky oak casks for 21 years and then finished off in a Port Pipes for a couple months, it’s also bottled at an abv of 40%. It’s mainly found in whisky specialist shops here in the UK.


Tasting Notes:
Colour: Chestnut Gold.
Nose: On the nose ooh, it begins with sweet bread, a variety of red berries raspberries, strawberry jam and raisin ice cream maintaining a nice creamy texture. After letting the whisky breath it develops a freshly cut peaches and cinnamon powder infused with honey.
Palate: On the palate notes of nutmeg open this whiskies flavour profile making way for raisins, blood orange zest and mouthing coating creamy texture, reminding me of eating double cream. Full in texture and note of vanilla make a way through, now the berries are back blackberries this time along with raspberries and red plums just on the end as a nutty character can be tasted in hazelnuts.
Finish: The finish is long and creamy rounded by sweet honey notes, sweet tobacco leaves add a completely different dimension as the richness of raisins and other dried fruit are accompanied by oily walnuts.

Comments: In my opinion on the Balvenie 21 Year Old Portwood is ‘just WOW,’ this whisky has so much depth, creamy texture, fruity notes and just its creation is stunning so hats off to David Stewart. But getting back to the whisky if I had to choose one part of this which I really enjoyed It would have to be the nose or the palate because both are so jam packed with flavour and I could easily spend a lot of time with them. As for the question of price it is up there at £140 but for the flavours and the sheer quality of this whisky I would say it is worth it. Also would I suggest any water and I think you’d know the answer, which would be a no and that’s because its bottled at 40% and you just lose all the textures instantly as it falls apart.
